How to improvise professional lighting in photography?

I currently have a Nikon D90, I don't have any professional gear and probably won't be getting some anytime soon. A friend of mine wants me to take the pictures for her catalog. She makes necklaces and bracelets. I might photograph them on models or with a white background (open to suggestions). The question is how can i improvise pro lighting?

Your best bet would be to buy a cheap light tent or make one as described in DIY sites and photograph the jewelry individually outside for a professional look without learning the lighting required for models.

Get a shooting tent from a place like BH Photo and then light it with work lights from Home Depot. Do not buy cheap lights online, they have no power and are a waste of money.

Get 500W quartz work lights from the hardware store for around $20.

They are not a standard color temp, so buy a $10 grey card and create a custom white balance after the lights have had a chance to warm up.
