Change the aperture.

The larger the f-number the greater the depth of field

Change your mode to A (aperture priority). Then using the command dial, rotate it so the aperture is the maximum (eg: 3.5 on the kit lens) for the shallowest depth of field (DOF). This gives you the effect that most beginning photographers really want, where one subject is in sharp focus and everything in the foreground and background is a blur. You may have to change the ISO so the camera doesn't choose too slow a shutterspeed, or you can pull out a tripod if it goes below 1/60 or 1/30.

In the opposite direction, if you want more of the subject in sharp focus (such as with a large group of people or a nice landscape), rotate the dial so the aperture is towards a smaller f/stop such as f/16 or f/22.

Step by step instructions… Hmm you certainly wouldn't want to actually learn how your camera works right?
Buy and read a book called "Understanding Exposure." If you don't know how your camera works, you are just a poser.

Go to your manual, and search for "depth-of-field" or "aperture" or "f/stop" in the index. It will give you step-by-step instructions on how to change it.

For most cameras, you turn the mode dial to "A" for aperture-priority, then flick the control dial to the desired f/stop value. The higher the number, the deeper the depth-of-field. The lower the number, the shallower.

This may seem like a joke, but I'm totally serious so Please read what I'm about to say!

Step 1

READ A BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY MANUAL! Just the act of buying a camera and goofing around with it does not educate you on how to take quality photos. This is how all things are learned, by reading books. If you asked every single question there's to ask about basic photography, you alone would crash this site with the volume of questions you could come up with!

Step 2

READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL! It didn't come with your camera to protect it during shipment. It is there to guide you on all the little things that you need to know to operate this specific camera and apply what you learn from reading your basic photography manual.

Step 3

ONLY AFTER you've completed Step 1 and Step 2, should you resort to Step 3; asking random, unqualified people on the internet for help!

Again, this may seem like a joke, but I'm totally serious! The other answers here are fine but if you're asking this, you are probably unaware of literally thousands of other facts you need to know about in order to effectively use this camera and you can't ask us all those questions, nor, for that matter, are you even aware of all the questions you'd have to ask if you don't READ THE BOOKS!
