The D40 has a special feature that keeps it resale cost higher than its contemporary cameras

Since it has a CCD sensor, it can sync with flash at faster shutter speeds than the mechanical shutter could be expected to sync (typically 1/250th second), namely 1/500th and 1/1000th second which makes it a prize for those shooting sports outdoors who need to use flash to fill the shadow area of the object when back lit by the sun

What you will find is that IF you can find a D40 camera for sale, it will cost you more than a used D40x or D60

EBay completed listings shows D40s going for:

http://www.ebay.com/...=1&_ipg=50

The current completed listings show a D40 with lens that sold for $240, but a body only that did not sell for $150. Since eBay sometimes has inflated listings, I would say use those guidelines for the maximum amount you want to spend.

And I have to comment on the above post.

The limitation of shutter speed in a flash has nothing to do with the sensor, it is because that above 1/200th of a second, the shutter begins to close before it is fully open.

And any shutter speed higher and there will be a black band across the photo when using a flash.

This is true regardless of whether the camera has a CCD, CMOS, or even 35mm film.

However, some flash systems on select Nikon DSLRs can have shutter speeds as high as 1/4000th of a second. This feature is called "Auto FP Sync", and both the camera and flash must support it. Essentially, the flash output is extended over a longer duration to allow those faster shutter speeds.

Seems someone that calls themselves a pro would realize this.

Like anything else on the internet, take everything with a bit of skepticism.
