How to get these kind of tones?
I love the tones in the photo above but no matter what settings I use in my Nikon D90, I just can't get them.
You can mess with curves in Photoshop, or google for "retro actions for photoshop"
Its the big thing right now.
You can't get this tone directly in the dslr without some complicated tinkering with the color balance. An easier way is to take the pictures in RAW format and post edit them.during the latter process, sllide the hue towards pink. Also use a slighter cooler white balance (towards blue). I prefer lightroom for post-editing.
Go to www.adorama.com and look up sepia filters. Get the one that fits the lens you're going to shoot with. That's a very basic way to get that tone, how you expose it will have a lot of effect as well.
If you want to do it in Photoshop, or Photoshop Essentials, it's a matter of adding a layer.
1. Open the image and then on the layer right click and 'duplicate layer' (this prevents any damage to the original image).
2. At the bottom of the layer pallet you'll see a little circle that is half black/half white, click on that and go to 'photo filter'. You can either pick a standard filter, such as sepia, or click on the color itself and then click 'go to color library' (or to that effect). That will open another box with a long verticle bar made of little bars of color. Move the arrow down till you get to 'Warm Grey'. Try them as you like, but using 'Warm Grey 7', and increase the density to about 60% with the 'maintain illumination' buttom, you'll get a similar result as the old Selenium toning.
Have fun with it.
