How to shoot fireworks?

What settings would I need as far as shutter speed, aperture, etc? Also, please explain those terms? I'm going to shoot a few photos on "auto" but I'd like to experiment a little ( but I don't know how!). I'll have a my "bridge" p&s or possibly my universities Nikon D3100 ( a bit intimidating! ) Unfortunately I won't have a tripod

You need a tripod to get dramatic photos.
Here is a video about shooting fireworks.

If you don't have a tripod, don't bother trying for any trails with long exposures. Maybe you can get away with 1/4 second if you brace the camera on a car or a firm backpack or something. Try 1/4 sec, wide open (probably f/3.5, unless you need to zoom in). Start at ISO 200 and increase it if you shots are too dark.

* tripod
* set the ISO to 200
* with the lens in manual mode and focus on infinity
* set the shutter speed to bulb
* open the shutter for two or three bursts.
* adjust the lens aperture to adjust for the best colour saturation.
