Good Lens Upgrade from the 18-55 Kit Lens? - 1

I already have a 55-300mm zoom so please don't suggest any zoom lenses, I also have a good macro so don't suggest any of those either.

I would just like one for general picture taking, an all around good lens. I have a Nikon D90.

There's nothing wrong with the 18-55mm kit lens. You just have to learn how to use it.
And buy a better lens won't get you any better pictures - again, the issue that you have to learn how to use the equipment you have.

I think a kit lens IS a "general picture taking" lens. Many other lenses are for special types of photography. For example, portrait lenses are for making the background blurry and the subject clear and in focus. A kit lens takes basic photos of everything, whereas a portrait lens takes nice photos of people, but not as stunning photos of landscapes.

You don't necessarily "upgrade" lenses, since you can't do anything to them to make them better. You can replace it with a better lens that covers the same range

secondly, a zoom lens is a lens that can change focal length. The 18-55mm is a zoom lens, even though it is wide angle- slight telephoto.

anyway, an "upgrade" of the 18-55mm would be the 17-55mm f/2.8 or 24-70mm f/2.8

if you want a prime lens for general photography, the 35mm f/1.8 is a fine lens.
