This is the CHEAPEST lens that will AUTOFOCUS with your CAMERA: http://www.nikonusa.com/...F1.8G.html" class='ext_link'>http://www.nikonusa.com/...F1.8G.html

List price is $219, search a bit and I'm sure you can get it for 199.

None of Nikon's AF lenses will autofocus on the D3100. They require an in-camera autofocus motor, which the D3100 does not have. You will need to choose AF-S lenses (which have a focus motor built into them) if you want them to autofocus on your camera.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G that Jeroen linked you to is Nikon's newest 50mm. It's fully compatible with the D3100. Another option would be the more expensive AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G, which has a larger maximum aperture. You probably would not notice a significant difference between the quality of those two lenses.

The new Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8 should be available now.

B&H shows it for $219.95 + shipping and says its available for pre-order so it isn't in stock yet.

Buy the newest 50mm lens => Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G AF-S.
It is 100% compatible with the D3100. I also have the same lens and camera.

Trust me it is one of the best lenses for that camera.
