Focus Problems with Nikon D3000 with Polarizing Filter?

I'm trying to use a Polarizing filter on a Nikon D3000 with a Nikkor DX 55-200 AF-VR. I'm using auto focus on and vibration reduction on. But the photos that I take with filter are out of focus, while the photos without the filter are perfect. Obviously the filter is interfering with the focus function of the camera.
I tried cleaning the filter, but that did not seem to make a difference.
Any suggestions?

You are using the incorrect polarizing filter
You need a circular polarizing filter… This is true for ANY auto-focus camera/lens combination
