DSLR flashes and lenses?

I want to get a zoom lense for my Nikon D40 only for better quality photos. I also would like to get an extra flash but I don't know all the points of having an extra flash.

External flash provides better lighting and more power. Also, you can tilt the flash head to bounce the light of the ceiling and walls producing softer light.

What do you want your zoom lens for? If it's for a general walk around lens. The 24-70 f2.8 is a great lens. It's good for landscapes, portriats, groups shots, decent for events.

If you are looking for something for sports then something like 70-200 f2.8 is a good start.

As far as flashes go, the sb600 is a good flasdh. I personally regret not getting a flash that can use a powerpack but I do weddings so…
