You can get a cheat sheet that will help you with the technical aspects of the camera. For tips on better photos, try and fill as much of the viewfinder with your subject as you can, get the subject slightly off center, and try to drop to one knee rather than standing to take photos. Be aware of shadows and light, use the fill in flash as needed. Use the neck strap, these things don't do well when they bounce. Oh and when taking a photo, take more than just 1. If you are shooting a group, take as many as are in the group. Someone is always going to have their eyes closed. And take a lot of photos and note what you did well, and what you didn't. Seriously, I shoot a few girls for a few different websites. It is not uncommon to take 175 photos at a shot to get those 10 really really great ones.

Read some books about composition, and exposure. Better yet, find the old Kodak exposure guide that they put in film. Even better than that find a copy of the Kodak Professional Photographers Guide. It's got a lot of great info on it.

Don't rely on software to correct your photos, take them right and just fine tune them The only editing software that I really use a lot is Nikon Picture Project. I have capture also but do not use that too often.

Oh yeah, and learn how to set the white balance, and then make sure it is set correctly for the light that you are in.

I've shot this camera for quite some time. Experiment with the different metering methods, see what AF-C mode gets you. Go shoot raw.

In fact there's only a few things not very good at all, the AF system is simple and crude, the iso can only be adjust in full stops and bracketing needs a bit of practice to master.

When reviewing your images the brightness of the LCD is very greatly affected by viewing angle. To check if your exposure was reasonably accurate, make use of your histogram and your highlights viewing mode.
