Do all nikon lenses fit on the nikon d3100?
Hi so I'm probably going to get the nikon d3100 and I don't know what lense to get so I have 3 questions: do all nikon lenses fit on all nikon cameras? If not do they all fit on the d3100? And what lense do you recommend for filming mini movies and stuff like that?
I don't think so but to be honest I'm not 100% sure. I'm eye balling a Nikon d3200 as my first DSLR and I have done some research on what lenses look right for me, and since our camera's are the same line it might help you too. I did find this website that list comparable lenses for a 3100 (http://lenshero.com/lenses/nikon-d3100-lens) and this site (http://gizmodo.com/5331109/the-3-dslr-lenses-you-need-and-2-more-youll-crave) helped me learn about lenses a little and which one's will work best for my needs.
The lens type really depends on how you will be photographing or filming. Are you filming in a small space but want to capture a lot of room a wide angle lens is best for that. If you are filming wildlife from afar you'll need a telephoto zoom lenses. If you are just looking for an all around lens you can get a standard lens(18-55mm) in a bundle kit almost anywhere you plan to buy the camera from.
I also hear that one of the most important things you can buy for your DLSR is a UV filter for your camera. It's only about $10 but it protects your lens and apparently can even save your lens from cracking if you accidentally hit it against something.
I'm a total newb but I hope I helped some.
Nearly all Nikon lenses do physically fit onto the D3100, but the only ones which will give you auto-focus are the AF-S lenses.
You do also have the choice of using Sigma branded lenses, but you need Nikon fit lenses with the HSM HyperSonic Motor built in. If it isn't HSM then again it won't auto-focus.
For movies, start with your standard 18-55mm lens. If you frequently find that you can't zoom close enough then consider getting one of the 55-200mm or 55-300mm AF-S VR lenses. If you find that you need to fit more in then consider getting a super-wide angle like the Sigma 10-20mm HSM. Don't buy yet though. If the standard lens is not limiting you then you will only be wasting money by buying something you don't need or buying the wrong thing.
Historically no since Nikon did change their mount in the very early days but most that you will find today will fit. The question would be autofocus compatibility. See this.

For shooting video, the lens will depend on what exactly you are trying to achieve, how far will you be from the subject, how much of the scene would stay relatively in focus and what lenses are available to you. Basically it's the same as photography as each lens has it's own purpose. If you understand how to look at lenses properly, picking the right lens would come naturally.
