D5100 lens contact isuues?

When using a Nikkor 70-200 MKII my D5100 will occasionally give me the f ee error. This doesn't make sense b/c the 70-200 doesn't have an aperture ring. I have used other lenses (14-24 and 17-35) on the 5100 and the 70-200 on other bodies (300s and 7000) and everything works fine. Nikon's customer service didn't want to listen when I said I was using a lens without an aperture ring. So my question is "has anyone else had lens-body communication issues with their D5100?"

What does an aperture ring have to do with it? The lens still has an aperture…

Camera-lens communications happen with all combinations. Don't mention the aperture ring, just explain the symptoms

You're on the right track, as the "F-ee" error usually shows up when the aperture ring isn't locked at the smallest aperture. And again, you're correct, as the excellent Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 doesn't have an aperture ring. I did a little research and found that your problem might be dirty contacts on the lens or camera body.

Generally it is an issue of not making good contact.

Get some isopropyl alcohol and lightly dampen a q-tip, and clean the sensor pins on the camera mount and see if this helps.

When you purchase the alcohol, go to a drug store and look for 99% alcohol if you can find it. Much of the cheap stuff you find in grocery or department stores is around 60% alcohol, which means it has 40% water in it. You want as high a concentration of alcohol as you can find as you don't want water residue left on the contacts after cleaning them.

Or find a good contact cleaner at an electronics store.
