I just got my d90, and on the first day of use i'm getting a cha error, where it locks up. Can I fix this or should i exchange it for another body?

Added (1). I got it off of amazon and it would be a pain to send back. Worth it?

I'd either exchange it or get in touch with nikon. On occasion a bad camera will slip through the cracks but not very often so get in touch.

It's been just one day, so get it changed with another one.

Read the user's manual about error codes. If it says that the error can be fixed by the user, go ahead and follow the instructions. If not, my guess is CHA error means CHAnge the owner. Bring it back to the store you bought it from. They should be able to advise you properly on how and where repairs can be done.

Have you ever returned anything to Amazon? I try not to! But they have always been great. The problem you may have is how good is the company that sent you the camera thru Amazon. I would send an email to Amazon and probably to the vendor that sold the camera. If you have not sent in the warranty card they will probably be able to help you. Ask Amazon through their return portion of their site. If the camera has been registered with Nikon (warranty card sent in) it would probably be faster and best to deal direct with Nikon.

Look in your manual on page 256. CHA means your memory card is broken or the wrong type.

Be sure your memory card is SD or SDHC type. This is clearly marked on the memory card. If it's a SD or SDHC card, you have a broken card. Get a new one.

Be sure you aren't using a MMC style memory card which looks exactly like an SD card with slightly different contact structure. The D90 will turn in to a sluggish beast (takes minutes to perform any function) if you use a MMC memory card. I have seen people do this before.

Since you aren't the type to read the manual, when you plug in your first SD memory card, be sure to format it with the camera's format function. See page 202 in your manual.
