Can I use this lens on my camera?

This is a follow-up to my last question.
I have a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera. I want to get a film camera. Someone told me I can use pretty much all SLR lenses on my camera. Can I use this one?

I'm not quite sure what most of that means, but that lens comes on a N2020. Will it work on the D3100?

It will work on the N2020.It won't autofocus on the D3100 or D5100. You can use it, but you'll have to focus it by hand.

If you want one lens that works on both kinds of cameras, you need to find a different film SLR. The D3100 needs AF-S lenses, and the N2020 doesn't support those.

I could explain it to you but I tend to over do it. This is shorter.

Your camera, being an entry level DSLR will not have the full capability to use AF lenses. The lens will still work on your camera, but you will not be able to autofocus it. The reason is that you do not have an internal focusing motor in your camera, while AF lenses requires it for autofocus.

For your D3100, to maintain autofocus, you need an AF-S lens, as these lenses have a built-in autofocus motor.

But here is your real issue. A film camera of the vintage of the N2002 will not autofocus with AF-S lenses due to it's age, but will autofocus AF lenses as it has the in-camera autofocus motor. But your D3100 will not autofocus with AF lenses; only AF-S lenses.

So if you want a single lens to work on both cameras, sell your D3100 and buy a D90 or D7000, as they do have an internal autofocus motor, and can use both AF and AF-S lenses, and will let you buy AF lenses to work both on your DSLR and N2002.
