Can I use my Nikon D40 lenses on a Canon T3?

I have a Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lenses. I'm getting either a canon T3 or T2i. Can I save money and just buy the body and use my Nikon lenses?

Short and simple, it would be a stupid idea.

to use Nikon lenses on a Canon camera, you need an adapter, which will take away autofocus, metering, aperture control, and probably more.

nonetheless, the 18-55mm is a cheap lens, If you are bent on getting a canon DSLR, just go ahead and get the kit

Um, you would have to get an adapter. But you could get a Canon 18-55 for like $100… Or just get a Nikon camera…

And in your last question you were getting a d90 or d7000.

Nikon lens + nikon camera = works
canon lens + canon camera = works
Canon camera + nikon lens= requires adapter but can work
Nikon camera + canon lens = not advisable, poor results with an adapter

Switching camera systems is always a losing affair.

You have to replace your existing lenses with the ones from the new system.

You will save money and actually get a better performing sensor if you upgrade to the Nikon D5100 which competes directly with the T2i/550D

As you can see, the comparable Nikon has a much better sensor.

There's an adapter, but you will lose auto-focus and maybe the ability to use the cameras light meter to determine exposures in any mode but manual

Here is what one maker of such an adapter says about their $270 Nikon to Canon adapter (Novoflex Lens Mount Adapter):

"Although the lens will fit physically, automatic diaphragm (AE metering), or any other functions are not retained using this adapter. In this case you will need to meter in "stop-down mode" since the lens does not have the ability to have its aperture controlled by the camera body"

As you can see, the adapter costs more than a second lens (like the 55-200 mm -- $250) for your existing camera system
