Can I trigger wirelessly SB-700 with my Nikon D3100?

I own a Nikon D3100 and planning to buy speedlight. I know that SB-700 can be mounted onto D3100. But, can D3100 remotely (wirelessly) trigger SB-700. If yes, what is the wireless range covered, meaning the distance from the camera to speedlight. Since I don't see any guide in the internet for doing so…

The D3100 does not include a wireless flash controller, so you can't control the flash using iTTL commands from the camera. I read on here yesterday (something along the same question as yours) that if you place the D3100 flash into manual mode and the SB-700 into SU-4 slave mode, it will work. I have no experience doing so, nor do I own either piece of gear to try it out. All this does is tell the flash to fire, you have to set the power of the flash manually prior to the shot.

As with all such flash control, range is usually no more than 30 feet, and can be much less if you try this out doors.

The Nikon D3100 does not have a wireless speedflash option but I have had good luck with the "CowboyStudio NPT-04 4 Channel Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Trigger" on my SB-600. The product works great and is only 25.00. The flash's intensity does have to be adjusted manually.

If you want to go the proven route with full Commander Mode (Nikon Creative Light System), you need a Nikon SU-800 commander unit. Put it in your hot shoe and then it will trigger the SB-700 as a remote with full control from the camera-mounted SU-800.

Refer to this question, it's the same except that it's about the D3000, but that does not make a relevant difference here.

Note that you won't get TTL wirelessly off camera with a D3100 and a SB-700 at all unless you buy a Nikon CLS compatible commander unit such as the SB-800 as well or some really expensive pocket wizard radio triggers. Setting the power manually is not a bad thing at all though.
If you want to use your flash off camera exclusively and not on the camera at all, then save your money and get a Yongnuo YN560 instead. It too can be triggered as an optical slave (even with the popup flash of your camera in TTL mode), cost but a third of the SB-700 but does not have TTL on camera.
