Can I take amazing portrait (Model) with Nikon D3100 with an 18-55mm lens?

I'm planning to buy the Nikon D3100 because of its price and I heard it takes amazing pics. However, I would like to know if a Nikon D3100 with its primary lens(18-55mm), whether I can take amazing portrait like for model with this lens? Or do I need another lens? I know other lens are expensive and if the 18-55mm is enough to get some portrait photos like these photos(provided in link below), I will be satisfied.

Note: These photos are samples of what kind of portrait photos(model) am looking for. They are certainly not taken with a Nikon D3100(I guess)

Please Guide and advice me!

The D3100 would be perfectly capable if taking photos like those. However to get good portraits you need three other things. First, you will need a lens with a much larger maximum aperture than the 18-55 lens. A prime lens like a 50mm f/1.4 would work well. Second, you need a good lighting set-up with umbrellas and strobes. That can cost hundreds or even thousands if dollars. Third, you need to buy and learn how to use photo editing software like PhotoShop. Every professional looking portrait you have ever seen has been edited after the shot was taken. Good portrait photographers spend years learning how to use the above listed things.

Portrait photography requires telephoto lenses (in the 85 - 135mm range, maybe 200mm) for a more flattering look and a large aperture (f/4 at least, f/2.8 preferred, f/1.8 great) for a nice DOF (depth of field) aka blurred background.

Most of the photos you provided were shot in a studio with 2 or 3 lights. The 5th and the 8th ones I think were available light.

So at a minimum I'd recommend a good lens (see sources below for some starting points) to get you started with available light. After you master composition, you can buy some flashes and umbrellas to start with a more controlled light

YOu could easily do those shots with a d3100 and a lot of them even with a 18-55. Only that shot of the girl agains tthe brick wall will be impossible.

Difference here is studio lighting which you do not have.

I shoot that lens on a d300 but there's no reason why you could not get at least the same results on a d3100
