This will work well with your camera because it is a crop frame sensor, will be the equivalent of a 50mm lens on a D3x

Everyone seems so hung up on prime lenses these days when, and I've been doing this business a long time, any good lens will do the trick because the shots are up to the photographer not the lens.

This for instance.

Canon Rebel XS, Canon 28-200 lens.

And this, same camera, same lens.

Accept for low light it's not the lens it's the photographer knowing his gear… That's it. There are no magic bullets out there for any kind of shooting, only talented people who know their equipment.

50mm to 75mm will be do great if you can go close enough to your subject. If on-stage, you'll need a longer telephoto, perhaps 200mm to 300mm.

Your best option is a prime (non-zoom) lens. 135mm is the usual for 35mm cameras, which translates to about 85 or 105 for a DX crop. If you can't find one (used on eBay or rental), the 18-200 VR DX is an okay choice, having larger glass than the kit lenses.

A 50mm is not suitable, as it would exaggerate facial features.

Keep in mind that your audience is composed of industry professionals who look at headshots for a living, and can easily pick out (read: throw away) work from an amateur.
