Well yes, but you will not be able to use the CLS mode on the camera. Being able to adjust the power of separate flash units from the camera is a very cool thing.

Have you ever attended one of the Nikon Schools? One of the things covered with demonstrations is the Commander Mode using flash

Sure they are, in that the camera will set off the flash or trigger when you trip the shutter. They do require that you understand how to shoot with manual flash and with the camera in manual mode, it will not work properly in any of the auto modes. The flash will still fire, but the camera will not take the flash into account, and you will get over-exposed shots every time. This sort of gear must be used in manual mode.
