Amateur photographer - matte or lustre for portfolio?
Hi I'm somewhat a beginner in photography and I would like to start printing some of my photos and placing them into a professional binder. I call it a portfolio, but I'm not actually looking to get a photography job, it is just my hobby. I shoot with a Nikon D3100 SLR. I go to Costco to print, they're print quality is very good and I can't afford to get them printed anywhere else. Costco only offers matte or lustre. Which one should I pick? Also, is it common for photos to have a thin, white border around it or should I not get a border?
I use glossy printing.
Just spend $.13 and have two 4x6 inch prints made of the same image and see which you like the best
Just my opinion: Matte will really take the brightness out of your images. I pretty much limit matte to black and white or very subtle color prints. Most are on luster or e-surface, which is a commercial luster paper.
If you are going to mat your prints, the white border may help you keep more of the image visible, but if you are using an album, stick to borderless.
For your portfolio I would go with Lustre. Have you looked at White House? They are very reasonably priced, and you would have more options.

For me I actually prefer Luster. Most of my photos in my portfolio are actually done in Luster, but the last batch of photos that I had done were printed in Glossy which I had forgotten to request the photos to be done in Luster.
Glossy or lustre is best - it helps to sharpen the appearance of the shots and borders to tend to look a bit more professional.
