DSLR - Sony SLT A33Y vs Canon Equivent?

I'm upgrading from Kodak Z7590.

I've been looking at the Sony DSLR A33Y Kits… And i'm interested.
But as i'm new to SLR Camers i'm really a Novis and not sure what make, Makes a better camera.
I hear Sony is new to this however its continuing the Minolta camera line.
And Canon and Nikon have had cameras made for some time.

Personally, I was hoping for a Sony or Canon.

Any ideas guys?

Althought i'm new, I'm assuming ill still get Quality feedback. Thanks.

RRP: For the Sony SLTA33Y 2 Lents kit is $1399 AU
I did get a price for $1169 however i'm sure i could bring them down to maybe $1100 or maybe lesser.

As for the canon…

Added (1). EDIT1 to First Replier:
Never thought of getting Nikon actually, i was thinking more so Canon, But maybe Sony…

Price range however for me would be around $1000-1200 AU

Added (2). EDIT2: Thanks Tom,
I was talking to a Photographer yesterday in town, We had Bicycle race happenin in town which was perfect timing for me.
He Uses Canon, with hes $10, 000 Lens etc… Changing Base Camera every few years.
Obviously i'm not up with him and required to update every few years nor will i probably want to.
Ill be more so just wanting a better camera then what i have now, to last maybe 5years with the lens that i can get… Now. Maybe down the track ill have learnt more about SLR and maybe in more money by then to want to buy even better and more lens etc.
As of now, I've read up on a Current canon EOS 550D. Doesn't seem to have the Bells and Whistles that the Sony has. But then again, is Canon more about Photo Quality where as Sony is about Fancyness?

A Nikon will beat them both if you can afford it.

I have been shooting with Sony DSLR's for five years with no regrets. The A55 DSLT is on my wish list.
For around the same money check out purchasing the A33 body only and the SAL18-250 lens

This will give you the same range as the kit and you don't have to worry about changing lenses out in the field.

PopPhoto has named the A55 as camera of the year, the A55 is the same as the A33 with a few more bells & whistles and 16.2MP vs 14.2MP
