DSLR cameras and companies?

I want a good dslr camera able to take video but i'm so confused with all of the companies out there. I was looking at the Sony A33 but i didn't know if a canon or nikon or whatever was better. I want one thats no more than $800 and used for regular shooting.

The A33 is strictly speaking not even a DSLR. IT also has the worst battery life I've ever seen on a camera with interchangeable lenses
