I'm about to buy my first DSLR camera. Are Cannon cameras or Nikon cameras better? Suggestions? Any other brands that are satisfactory. I have a price cap of $500-$600.

In that price range, the Nikon D3100 and Canon 1100D/T3 will be your two choices

If I say Canon is better, and someone says Nikon.what's the point? That can't help anyone.

Canon EOS T3, Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r are your best options for that price range.
