If you're camera isn't Nikon, its better to go with Sigma for compatibility. Being a 3rd party company they support most major brands of DSLR. While Nikon lens may not be completely supported by a DSLR Cannon.
Otherwise, its best to check review between the two.
If you're trying to compare a brand (Nikon) to a mass market (Sigma) lens, then it's probably safe to guess you've got a Nikon camera.
If you have the money, get the Nikon, no question. Nikon lenses have generally been outstanding.
The question is, will you notice the difference? Honestly, most amateurs won't.
Here is a review of Nikon's Nikkor 12-24mm lens.

You didn't ask, but the Tokina 12-24mm did better than the Sigma

And, the Tamron 10-24mm did rather well too.

- Which lens would be the better choice: Sigma 24mm 2.8 AF or the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S?
- What kind of performance does the Nikon D3100 have?
