AI and AIS lenses will fit, but you lose AF and most, if not all, of your metering modes.

Yes but you don't get auto functions with all of them, only manual. Some of the older lenses are just the same optically but in a different barrel and they can be well worth getting.
See on here for the lovely old 105mm F2.5, costing over $900 new but around $250 used for a good condition oldie that can still rival any modern counterpart.
