The D5300's GPS, flip out screen and increased dynamic range makes it more attractive to me.

Ans NO, the D5300 is no where near the professional level. You would have to either by an older used Nikon D300 or wait for the new Nikon D9300 (the price is estimated to be around $2,000 with no lens) that should show up in the next six months or so. The professional full frame Nikon is the D4 and D4s ($6,500 with no lens)
As you can see in the link below, a professional Nikon camera performs much better in low light than either of the entry level Nikons, D3300 and D5300.

The D5300 is a class higher than the D3300 hence it has better features and is naturally more expensive. At the very basic level though, they are the same and whatever picture you get from one will be the same if you used the other. The pricier camera however will make that shot easier to take if you know exactly how to take advantage of it.
