Canon lens name explanation?
Want to but a canon dslr but i'm confused in usm, usm l. I'm aware of nikon fx dx but have no idea about canon.
Canon's EF-s are the same basic idea as Nikon's DX lenses only. They only work on the canon crop
sensors like the rebel line, the XXD line and the 7D. EF will work on both.
L is canon's premium, top of the line professional lens glass
USM is ultra sonic motor. Faster focus motor, quieter.
IS-image stabilization. Reduces blur in your images from camera shake
Those are the most basic canon terms that you will run into.
Don't forget with Nikon you need to know AF-s and AF. If you purchase a low end Nikon body you will need AF-s lenses as the focus motor is not in the body of the camera.AF-s lenses have the motor in them.
USM for Canon is like AF-S for Nikon… It has nothing to do with sensor size.
All Canon lenses for the EF or EF-S mount (with 1 very specialised exception) are focused by a motor in the lens. There are 3 levels of motor used. The basic motor, the basic USM models, and the "ring-type" USM models. All USM models focus pretty fast, the ring USM models focus very fast and almost silently. You will also pay a premium for that high end focus speed.
