What do you think is best (all around and for the money)… Sb-400, sb-600, sb-700, or sb-r200

All-around for the cash, I'd say the SB-600.It's a great flash, not too expensive.

If you can work manually and don't care about the ttl & nikon CLS system, I would say get an old sb-24, sb25.

I got one sb25 second hand for about 100$, work A1.

Otherwise if you want the ttl and want to be able to use the Nikon CLS system I'd go for a second hand sb600 or sb800 (more power). The sb400 I do not recommend it, since there's no adjustment on it.

The SB-700 is your best choice.

While the SB-600 is a nice flash (I have one) it has recently been discontinued. When I bought mine, they were about $220, but for some inexplicable reason any retailers still having them in stock have increased the price to around $300. For the small difference in price, the SB-700 ($330) is the clear winner, both in capability and bang for the buck.

The SB-400 is a basic flash and has no wireless remote capability as the SB-600 or SB-700 does - if that is important to you. And it is not much more powerful than your camera's built-in flash (if you have a DSLR). The only reason I would buy a SB-400 is if I owned a Nikon P7000.

The SB-R200 is a special-purpose macro flash. It is intended for close ups, so it is even less powerful than your camera's built-in flash (close up doesn't require a lot of power).

The SB-$200 can't be mounted on your hot-shoe. It is intended to be an extra flash for Nikon's R1C1 Macro kit, and can only mount on the lens ring included in that kit. But if you buy just the SB-R20, it does come with a mounting base so you can use it by itself or on a tripod mount. But again, it has no hot shoe mount to mount on your camera.

Also, the SB-R200 can only be used with a wireless commander such as the SU-800, or a remote synch cord. Or you could even control the SB-R200 as a second highlight flash with the SB-700.

But again, they require something on your camera to control them (remote commander capability, SU-800, or synch cable).
