So my 15th birthday is coming up and I asked my parents for a Nikon camera with a lens my mum told my dad to get me one for my birthday and we've been looking at some I found one for £100 which came with a lens, bag, charger and other stuff which was 8mp but when I told my dad about the camera he was like oh that's no good it's only got 8mp which isn't good for taking photos.

I then found another one for £120 which included camera plus 3 x lenses and the light for attaching on top it also had a bag with plenty of other accessories which was great for the price and it was a 10mp I told him about this one and he kept an eye on it and even bid on the thing one time but then he walks into my room without even asking if I liked the camera he found and he shows me that he bought me a Nikon camera base only for £45 which only has 6.1mp which I thought he said wasn't good

this was the only thing I was getting for my birthday and my mum had £200 saved for something for me but he just spent £45 on the cheapest camera he could find. My dad had the £200 for my birthday with him and I know for a fact that he's bought his "friend" something for £102 so I think he's used some of my birthday money which is why he was looking for a cheap camera.

I needed a good camera because when I join college I was going to do a photography course.

You can't do anything with your dad. Don't worry, the 6MP camera is good enough for college.

With a father like that, you don't need enemies…

Megapixels are the absolute LAST thing to be concerned about. A 6 MP SLR camera is far, FAR better than even a 20 MP point and shoot camera. It comes down to sensor, and thus pixel, SIZE. Don't fret at all about the 6mp. What is far more important is the condition of the body… It's called a body, not a "base". Hopefully it is not worn out already, but there's not a lot you can do about it now. You are certainly going to need a lens. Go back on Ebay and find the Nikon "kit" lens which will be an 18 - 55 lens. You should be able to get a used one quite cheaply.

For college, all you need is a fully adjustable camera, and you now have that. When you are making enough money to buy your own gear, then you can start looking at more recent, higher megapixel cameras and more pro quality lenses.

If your Father actually did what you said, … Well, I don't think that was a good thing to do, but it may also be he does not want to invest a lot of money into your photography at this point as you may later decide you hate it or just get bored with it. Hey, it happens. Use what you have. It will work for you, (again, assuming the body is not worn out already).

Here is an excellent book that, frankly, can likely teach you just as much, if not more, than you will learn in school.

Any Nikon DSLR at £100 is likely quite old, but might be a reasonable proposition, I have seen a few in shops around £100 to £150.

One with 3 lenses at £120 must be a wreck! It is simply far too cheap to be in good condition. Probably the lenses are "other brands", and not the best "other brands". A "bag full of accessories" is not much use if you never use them and they are all of poor quality. My strong advice would be to steer clear of that one.

Don't worry about the number of Mps. Not so many years ago professionals were happy to have 6Mps.

But do take a good look at the camera and lenses before you even think of parting with money for it. Get it all checked by somebody who knows how to use such cameras, since it seems that neither you nor your father knows much about the actual practicalities of such cameras.

Note that, in the English language, a mum is "she" and thus she spent £45 on a camera.
