You won't get very good zoom with a 30mm lens, but I'd still go with the nikon.

The Nikon V1 is a compact system camera with larger sensor (116 sq mm), interchangeable lenses, and even phase detect focusing (same as DSLRs), while the Sony is a compact camera, with a smaller sensor (28 sq mm), non-interchangeable lens, and less accurate contrast focusing.

While the Sony has more resolution (16Mp), megapixels do not tell the whole story, and the V1's 10Mp is more than sufficient for 99.9% of photographic situations.

The Nikon's 10-30mm lens is roughly equivalent to a 27 to 81mm lens, in 35mm terms. However, you can also buy a 30-110mm lens (as it is an interchangeable lens camera), which provides an effective 81 to 310mm lens in 35mm terms.

And if you have a Nikon DSLR camera, you can buy a FT-1 adapter. I have a V1 and can use my Nikon AF-S 70-300mm lens, which gives me an effective 190 to 810mm lens.

In contrast, the 20x zoom on the Sony is technically a super zoom lens, and like all super zooms, it will be optically marginal.

The Nikon V1 is a significantly better camera.

You'll be much better off with a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm VR lens. Far better than the V1.
