What lenses do I need at the Australia zoo?
I have a Nikon D7100. I need to know which lenses do I need to shoot pictures at the Australia Zoo.
What lenses do you own?
This is a Flickr search of Australia Zoo, the images might give you a clue to subject matter you might expect…
When I'm travelling I always take just two lenses, both zoom lenses. One is 35mm-95mm, the other is 85mm-300mm. These cover everything from wide angle to portrait to telephoto with an overlap around portrait. They are fine for just about everything. Don't take a flash to a zoo. They scare the animals.
I would suggest a fairly long zoom for those habitats where the animals are distant such as a 70-300mm, a more general wide angle to zoom such as the 18-55 or 18-105mm, and then just because I take it everywhere with me, the 50mm f1.4d prime.
Also, if you use autofocus make sure you are using a single af point- this way you can often shoot through wire fences etc and have the animal very focussed, often with the fence disappearing if you can get a wide enough aperture for the shot. Multiple AF points tend to be confused by fences so in the habitats without fences you can use them, but not when there are fences you have to shoot through
