List of DSLR prime lenses to have?

Jack

Buying a Nikon d7100 and need a good list of lenses that will cover most of my needs. From macro to tele, i need a good list to start off with. I have about $800 and primes seem to be cheaper so i want to try to get as much coverage as i can, I'm sure a long range telephoto is out of the question due to price but what about a list of others.

The AF-S 60 mm, f/2.8 macro lens will cost you about $700

A 85 mm f/1.8 lens will cost about $500

A 300 mm f/4 lens costs about $1, 500

Unfortunatly, the cost of a good wide angle lens like the 14 mm f/2.8 will cost you $2, 250.

You may want to start out using zoom lenses until you can put together a large enough budget to buy prime lenses.

A AF-S 24-85 mm zoom lens might be a better choice as your first lens, costing just under $745

LOL $800 LOL

What is the address of the cave where you live? I know you must have been living in one for the last 20 years to think good primes are always cheaper and that you are going to buy a collection for $800.

I have 4 primes for my Canon, from 24mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, and 135mm 2.0L and total cost was near $3000, and they are still not the very best of each lens (except for the 135 L lens).

If you need a range of focal lengths, I suggest you go for the 18-200 vr. It is not the best lens of them all, but it is decent and will cover the range from moderately wide to telephoto. $846 at B&H.

Otherwise you are going to have to adjust your budget radically upward to get a set of primes that will cover similar territory.

You can also look at keh for used lenses

No matter what. Never buy a new 50mm. There are countless of used almost new 50mm lenses at very cheap prices.
