Tamron vs Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 is there much difference in IQ?
Tamron vs Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 is there much difference in IQ? And what other options are there for a full frame camera around this zoom range?
If you're comparing the Tamron 24-70 vc with the Nikon non-vc, the Tamron will have sharper corners at the wide end and the Nikon will have a sharper center at the long end.
If you're talking about the Nikon 24-70 vr, then the Tamron wins hands down (it's also half the price).
The Sigma 24-70 is a cheap non-vr option, but lags in sharpness at all lengths. But this is an old lens. Sigma has been doing some amazing things lately with their "Art", "Contemporary", and "Sport" lenses. There's lots of talk about a Sigma 24-70 OS coming out… But that's rumor and an unknown regarding performance/price.
If you need the lens now, get the Tamron. Otherwise, I'd wait a year and see how the Sigma rumor shakes out. Bear in mind, there's little real-world difference in the Tamron and the non-vr Nikon lens (especially at f/8) and they all (with the exception of the Nikon 24-70 VR) are on par performance-wise with their price.
Here are the results of tests of the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lenses made by Tamron, Nikkor and Sigma
In the real world of photography, I have used the older Nikon AF-S 24-70 mm (circa 2007) for many years and it produces high quality, sharp images. I shoot both sports and fashion with this lens and have no plans to replace it any time soon
