How to turn off the flash on my Nikon DX?

I have recently been exploring the options of my Nikon DX and i can't seem to turn off the flash and it is very bothersome… Does anyone have any experience with this technology that could help me out?

Which Nikon DX

Each cropped sensor Nikon dSLR works a little differently.

My guess is that you are shooting with the camera in some kind of auto exposure mode and in low light the camera activates the on-board flash.

Generally if you shoot in the manual mode using the light meter to provide you with the correct exposure, the flash will be dormant

Just look in your user manuals index for pages on flash. I'm sure the answer is there

I can't be certain as you didn't give the model number, but try moving away from the subject programmes (which are a waste of space anyway).

Fhotoace is right about Manual - if you can master that, maybe you can call yourself a photographer.

All options are in the manual. It really is very bothersome if you don't read the manual first.

Most Nikon DX cameras pop up the flash automatically when the camera thinks it is needed if you leave the camera on the green fully-auto setting or the scene modes.

If you switch to the "P" program setting then the camera warns you, but leaves you to make the decision about when to pop up the flash.

There's an additional advantage to switching to "P" and that is program shift. When on the "P" setting you can use the wheel to switch shutter speeds and apertures.

There may be a down side though. On some Nikon DX cameras the "P" setting does not have the auto-ISO setting that the fully-auto green setting uses. You will need to check your manual to see if that happens on your camera. You may have to get used to setting your ISO manually. That's not a bad thing to learn about in the long run though.

RTFM.

If it's a DSLR, directly under the "AUTO" setting on the dial on the top right is a lightning bolt with a line across it. In that position the camera operates in the auto mode except the flash does not operate.
