What Nikon Camera Should I Purchase?

I have had a Nikon D50 for a few years and was looking to get a new camera. I'm in high school and don't do anything professional with photography, so I was thinking of maybe getting the Nikon 1 J2.Is it a large downgrade? Would it be worth it to spend more and maybe get a Nikon D7000, even if I wasn't looking to carry a large, heavy camera around? Would a Nikon 1 J2 be a huge sacrifice in photo/video quality?

The D7000 is a fine, semi-pro dSLR and with it you can use all your Nikkor AF, AF-I and AF-S lenses and if you like any Nikkor AI manual focus lens.

The J2 is a unique camera and people who would like to carry their camera and two lenses in their pocket, briefcase or purse, it's just the ticket

Video wise, the J2 is no slouch. It's smaller sensor will not perform as well as the D7000 but performs on par with your old D50

Nikon 1 cameras are perfect cameras, but i wouldnt buy one if i was you as i assume that you have got DSLR lenses. I have got a d7000 myself and i'm very pleased with it. In March or February it cost about 1050€, but there has been a huge price drop down to 750€. If you think it is an old model, wait a few months, i assume that nikon will release another DX soon.
