What Flashgun Should I Purchase For My Nikon D3100?

About a year ago, I bought my Nikon D3100 DSLR. I'm doing more and more amateur studio shoots so I need a flashgun because the flash on the D3100 is a little rubbish. I'm kindaa strapped for cash, so the cheaper the better. The Jessops 360AFD Digital Flashgun looked pretty perfect, but now Jessops has closed, I don't know what to do!

Nikon SB-700 would be a wise choice. Seems pretty simple to me.

If you are shooting in the studio you do NOT want to use an on camera flash.

Most studio photographers use continuous lamps (either incandescent or the new CF lamps) and use from two (key and fill light) to four (a background light and kicker or hair light) when they have low budgets (£90 to £700). That will require you to have at least two and up to four lights.

The cost of dedicated electronic flashes for dSLR's are over £200 each, not counting any light modifiers (barndoors, softboxes, shoots or umbrellas) is just too expensive to use them unless you travel a lot and need to carry less bulky lights. But to use electronic flashes like the Nikon SB 700's, you will also need a flash meter to you can set your lighting ratios since there are no "modeling" lamps on them

The only time someone uses a single, on camera flash is when shooting events and using the single flash as a fill light (shooting at half power or less)

Studio flash units can cost as much a £3, 500 for the power pack, stands, heads, light modifiers and remote triggering device such as Pocket Wizards. Truly you will need to make more money in your studio to be able to have such a budget.
