Nikon D800 problems?

Hi! So I worked for a photography company for a year just doing bits of photography here and there on a d800. I have since left and purchased my own.
I have not a clue what I'm doing with it but I'm not sure if the lens is broken? I purchased a nikorr 28-70 and it won't auto focus, not manually focus. I don't have a memory card yet as I'm still waiting for it to arrive so can't actually take pictures but I just wanted to mess about with it until then.
What could the problem be?
Also how do I switch the the screen for video mode? Because I flicked the switch and nothing happened!
Thanks

Added (1). - when I say won't focus… It does but not very well it's still really blurry!

While you're waiting for your memory card, READ THE MANUAL!

Does the viewfinder have adjustment for varying eyesight? Try adjusting that.

I agree with AVDADDY. Read the manual!

As you yourself admit, you don't have a clue. You've gone out and purchased several grands worth of top end camera equipment and you are in danger of wasting it or breaking by "messing about with it" because you can't be arsed to read the manual.

Quite frankly you don't deserve such a good camera and you certainly don't deserve the help of the many good people on these forums.

Like you, when I have a new toy I want to play with it right away. But sometimes you just have to wait until you have all the pieces in place. While you are waiting for the memory card, read the manual. If it didn't come with a manual, download one from Nikon.

Congratulations on the very fine camera. You have a lot to grow into.

"Waiting for the memory card to arrive"?
Just pop to the shops and buy a 1 gb card to get you started.

Regarding the focus issue, it may be a diopter adjustment issue. In your manual, look in the index and find "Diopter adjustment control".
Go to the drug store and buy a cheapo $10 SD memory card. Boy, I'd go nuts having a shinny new camera & no memory card.

If the body autofocus switch is turned to M that could explain it not autofocusing, but why won't it manually focus? If it is set to AF that can prevent it from manually focusing, so why won't it autofocus?
I'm going to guess that you have it set to AF preventing the manual focus. I'm also going to guess that you have the aperture ring set to something other than 22. Notice that 22 is in orange. What's so special about it? The aperture ring is for cameras or adapters that lack an electronic connection. The D800 has one. Setting it to f22 tells it to play along nice electronically. Setting it to something else will confuse the electronics, and it is only useful with an older model mechanical film camera or adapted to a non-Nikon with no electronic connection.
Set the ring to f22. There's a little locking latch on the lens next to the aperture ring. Lock it into that f22. The lens should now have its aperture controlled electronically by the body, and electronic function like AF should also start cooperating.

Even if you pushed the right button for video, it may be unresponsive until you have the lens in a compatible setting, and until you have a storage card inserted.
