Nikon D40 Lens Help 18-55 ED2 or VR?

I got this camera and i'm a begginer i need a lens which is better for the 18 - 55 as i don't understand is it ed2 or VR

Added (1). I also forgot to add is i only bought the body and i have no lens i only want it for family photos. If some one could explain the difference between VR and Ed2 would be helpfull and which one i should buy

As a beginner, why would you want to spend more money on a lens. The 18-55 mm will keep you busy learning how to use your fine camera for years if not longer.

VR is really only useful at focal lengths longer than 100 mm. I have a 300 mm VR lens and never use it in the VR mode. The one lens I do use in the VR mode is the 18-200 mm VR lens. That lens I use when shooting editorial assignments and sometimes using a flash is not an option
