I'm an amateur photographer trying to get better so I can become a professional photographer but need some help. I have a small dinky cannon camera but what to upgrade to something better. My dad has a Nikon D3200 that I'm taking out tomorrow to try out but wanted to see some opinions. I'm taking multiple classes through the community and once classes start again in August. Anyone have suggestions? Thank you!

Added (1). My budget is no more than $1500.

You forgot to tell us your budget.

Since your dad has Nikon gear, it would be prudent to buy another Nikon body. If you can budget for it, the new Nikon D5500 or better D7200 would be a great start.

Really any fully adjustable camera like a digital SLR will do what you need to take your photography classes, but sticking with Nikon will keep your initial costs down

Borrow your dad's camera often and practice shooting a lot under the sun.

Be aware that once you buy your DSLR you're also locking yourself into the manufacturer's lenses - which will be your major expense over time. As others have noted it is best to use your Dad's D3200 to get used to the Nikon layout but stay with Nikon for your first camera body and use Dad's lenses (if he allows) until you can afford own.

There are no bad DSLRs, so you can get any one you want.

However, if your father already has additional lenses for that Nikon D3200, then it makes sense to buy a Nikon so you can share lenses. If he doesn't have additional lenses, then get what you want. There are only 3 manufacturers who make DSLRs at your budget. Those are Canon, Nikon and Pentax. Visit their websites, and check out your options.

BTW it's Canon, not cannon!

Your dad has a great entry-level camera, most popular among beginners and the camera that is really getting great reviews among beginners and those taking their first photography classes is the updated Nikon D3300. Look up on the Internet for comparisons on these.

I recommend that you set your eyes on the Nikon D3300 with the kit lens but wait until a holiday since large camera shops like B&H cut down prices and make great offers, like 2-lens deals. This way, you and your dad can both go shooting together without switching lenses back and forth.

I recommend the D3300 over the D3200 because the newer model does not have the low pass filter (to prevent moiré; look up this term, that's part of learning) which makes it possible to capture slightly sharper images.

This camera will serve you well, and you'll likely have it for many years. It has all the features and options you will ever need to learn and enjoy photography for years to come.

Think about it this way…

Professionals 20 years ago used simple film cameras to make wonderful images. Some of them didn't even auto-focus. Basics of photography is still the same. Camera captures the light. Rest is up to you. Compared to these cameras, Your D3200 is dream come true.

High end cameras will let you make changes to the setting quicker. They are more durable. They work faster. How often do you need these features?
