If you can, get the Rebel T4i its the newest of that series. If you can't get the rebel t3i.

The BEST thing for you to do is visit an actual camera shop that carries all of the major brands and try out the different models within your budget to see which one feels the best to YOU.

If you happen to like a particular Canon camera, THEN go to the place your dad prefers as long as he can get the camera at a lower price than the other camera shops.

I bought a Canon for the ergonomics.menu/control layout and a fellow photographer bought a Nikon for the same reasons. We were out shooting one day and decided to swap gear. At the end of the day, the conversation wasn't about image quality, instead it was"You have a nice camera, but I didn't like the feel and menus system".

Try the new sony nex 5s
its a super tiny small body dslr that works absolutely amazing and is so tiny that you won't mind actually carrying it around unlock those huge beasts of a camera
it no joke has the same quality as the large dslr, and if you want to spend the same as you would for the rebel, you can buy the sony nex 7 which is a 24 mg pixel dslr and its the same size as the nex5.

i don't know just a thought, I know one thing… I'd be taking my camera more places if it wasn't the size and weight of a brick

The Canon T3i is the most similar to the D3100.

The worst thing you can do is to buy a camera that you are not satisfied with, regardless of it's cost.
