How to get the perfect color balance on a night shot?

Mhm I'm kind of embarrassed to ask that, cause I've been doing photo for a while, but I never really got interested in night photography until now. And now that I try, I really get it bad when it comes to color balance at night.
Maybe someone could help me: P

If you ever wonder, I have a D90 (nikon)… But that should not bother… Really…

Use the whitebalance, to balance out the ambient light until you get what you want.

alternatively:
use a white card or grey card and set that as a custom white balance.

Take the photos in RAW (.nef) format. That way, you can adjust the color (white) balance afterwards using the program that came with the camera. Don't worry about it too much when you are shooting, just shoot in raw and you can adjust it later before you convert it to.jpg.

If your camera did not come with the proper software, you can certainly download it from Nikon.

Yes, using a white card and shooting under the ambient light is a quick and dirty way to white balance your camera.

Here is the way we do it as a pro.

Shoot in RAW, balance it afterwards. Night photography looks good at a variety of white balances and/or tints.

If the lights are at different temperatures (different colors), put the white balance at 'daylight' setting and shoot.
If they are at the same temperature, depending on the light source, set the WB. Tungsten for tungsten light and fluorescent for fluorescent light etc.
Shooting in RAW, helps in these conditions. But would depend on how much you shoot and what time you can spend processing the RAW images.
