Best magazine (s) for photography?
I'm a beginner photographer and was looking at a couple of Photography magazines for interviews with professionals, tips, tricks, new stuff, etc.
I'm a Nikon user, and I know they have a magazine… So maybe that one? I know there are many though.
Any recommendations!
At the professional level, Photo District News (PDN) is the most popular trade magazine among commercial photographers. This is not exactly what you need but it does give you info geared towards working pros.
Rick - the guy's a beginner? I hardy think he wants a mag aimed at pros!
ANyway - there's quite a few to choose from, as you've realised, and they all pretty much cover the basics & have varying articles. Some ma be written in varying styles so it's best to shop around & see what suits YOU best.
I rarely buy mags, but if I do it's usually because there's a specific article I'm interested in, so I don't religiously stick to one publication.
I've been a subscriber to Shutterbug for many years. Good equipment reviews and good how-to articles.http://www.shutterbug.com
I also have a free subscription to Rangefinder. This is the "house organ'' for WPPI - Wedding and Portait Photographers International - and features outstanding wedding and portrait photographers. Its not as good for reviews or how-to but it does present excellent photography.
http://www.rangefindermag.com Its hard to beat free.
The Truth Is that you can find out Way more online or interacting with people. Once you break the surface, and I mean learn your camera and get familiar with the jargon, stuff you find on the internet and the people you interact with will make more sense.
I understand your question, everytime I go to the book store I see all of these glossy inviting magazines and I'm like, I need this. And then I thumb through them and I wonder why I ever picked it up in the first place.
So here's the part where you pick a magazine to buy, you pick one that appeals to you. One that has enough content to keep you interested in photography.
If you want good looking pictures then get Black and White, Nikon or National Geographic. For technical I recommend Photoshop, Photo Technique or View Camera. For high fluff, low content and TONS of ads there's always Popular Photography, Photo Graphic and Outdoor Photographer.
Shutterbug is the "Computer Shopper" of photo mags. Mostly ads with a decent story snuck in somewhere. The industry rags are mainly fluff with alot of posturing. I remember when PDN was essentially a restaurant guide to NYC(I may still have a copy shimming up a leg to my darkroom sink).
But wait there's more(This is where I get serious), so I discovered that my library has FREE subscriptions to ZINIO. Yours may and its worth it because you can download magazines, review them and you don't have the waste left over. Yes, National G, Lens Work and B+W magazine are like exhibition guides all beautiful and worth holding on to. But check out zinio, you may get it free from your school or library.
P.S. For fun get your hands on a Christies auction catalog they are really a thing of beauty, especially the photo auctions.
