"Awesome photo quality," is down to you, and how well and quickly you can learn how to get the best out of your camera.

Personally, I'd take the Pentax K-50, a mid-level DSLR at an entry-level price. All Pentax models allow metering with legacy lenses, and have pentaprism (better) viewfinders and body motors - any Pentax AF lens gives autofocus on any Pentax DSLR. Pentax are the oldest SLR manufacturer in Japan.

Sony's SLTs - the A-58 and A-65 - aren't true DSLRs, but their different technology makes them better video shooters than any true DSLR. Like Pentax, their anti-shake system is built into the body, and Sony sell sensors to both Pentax and Nikon.

Plenty of people will tell you about Canon and Nikon - I'm not a fan, but don't take the recommendation of anyone who's only owned one DSLR, and ignore any idiot who can't spell, "Canon," (they should be humanely put to sleep).

Find a dealer, handle a couple of likely candidates, and work it out for yourself. The best camera for YOU is the one that feels best in YOUR hands. Myth #1: You automatically get great pictures when you use a dSLR.
Myth #2: Somewhere out there, a beginner's dSLR exists.
Myth #3: In photography, you get exactly what you pay for. Well, this one's not a myth. It's true but with the following exception.
