Both manufacturers make expensive AND cheap lenses. If you could see a chart, with prices, of the vast amount of lenses made by both, you would see what I mean.

There are plenty of pro photographers who use Nikon gear, especially if they used Nikon before digital came along. I would hazard a guess that you may see more YOUNG photographers with Canon because Canon really got a big jump on Nikon with the digital SLR camera. Nikon lagged well behind Canon for many years on these cameras. Canon had the first digital sensor sized the same as 35mm film, and Canon also had much higher megapixel numbers than Nikon. The first Canon DSLR was only 3 mp, when the D60 came out with SIX megapixels, it seemed huge. When Canon then came out with the 1Ds which was the first and only "full frame" camera and also had 11 megapixels, it seemed like something out of science fiction. You have to keep in mind that cameras from other makers, including Nikon, were still mainly using THREE megapixel sensors. So many photographers just getting started during the early 2000 time frame, went with Canon simply because Nikon had nothing to compare. As money is spent on lenses and other Canon gear, these photographers stay with Canon. But again, there ARE PLENTY of pro photographers using Nikon gear today, you just may not be seeing them.

Actually, what I've found is quite THE OPPOSITE. I've found that Nikon lenses are more expensive and the rationale is that the glass elements are superior in design and quality of glass (insofar as glass composition). Also, I've found that most of the professionals I've come across use Nikon gear, and they swear by the Nikon superiority… Which may be subjective due to brand-name loyalty. I can tell you that I've found some professionals using Nikon lenses with adapters to fit their Canon cameras, and they claim it's because the lenses yield superior quality details in the images. Of course, Canon vs Nikon is an age-old difference of opinion, with each "camp" swearing by their preferred brand's "superiority" in camera and lens quality build. One gentleman told me that he spends less on Canon gear and since he generally upgrades every few years it costs him less; he's also of the opinion that both camera brands are equally as good. Personally, I still have my old trusty Nikon FE2, and both of my Nikon F5 camera bodies, plus 2 N80s I used as walk-around cameras… Plus my 6 AF lenses still in great shape, which I use with my Nikon D600 (I considered getting the D800 but… Why pay more when I have all I need in the D600?

1) Spend some time on these two sites and you will see that you can't make that generalization.

2) Most of my colleagues who buy their own dSLR cameras systems by Nikon gear. Most of those who are supplied all their camera gear, use the cameras that are handed to them and those tend to be Canon camera systems, but not always.

Do NOT use either of your two criteria to determine which camera system you buy (marry)

Until 1988, Canon did not have a professional level 35 mm SLR. Nikon has been producing such cameras since 1959 with the introduction of the Nikon F.

So it may be easy to understand why so many old school photographers still use Nikon gear, that and the fact that many of them have been shooting in low light conditions for decades and Nikon sensors for the most part produce the highest quality high ISO images.
