Nikon J1, if not, what else?
I'm 13 years old, and I love taking photographs outside and nature shots. I need a new camera, and I have worked really hard to save up 500 dollars. I was looking online, and I saw the Nikon J1. I have no idea about cameras at all. I don't know what to look for, and what's bad. Is that a good camera? If not, can you suggest some?
I need a camera that is
-Light
-Portable
-Good Zoom
-Good outside
-Good megapixel
Zoom is very important to me. Since I love nature shots, I can't get very close to animals. I depend on the zoom. Any cameras?
What you don't understand is… The Nikon J1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. So… How much 'zoom' (focal length) it has is FULLY dependent on which lens you have attached. And as you can see in the link below, there are currently only four lenses available… A 10-30mm, 30-110mm, 10mm or 10-100mm.So, if you're wanting good 'zoom' this camera is NOT for you…

These links may help you decide on a suitable camera with good 'zoom'. But, beware of compact cameras with 16 or 18MP… They will have worse IQ than cameras with less MP… So look for a camera with 10-12MP if possible…

If you intend to really get serious in photography, a hybrid camera won't do. Get a dSLR. Your budget is enough for the most basic models from the most popular brands. Just make sure you get one with a lens.

Just be ready to sacrifice zoom. In the dSLR world, zoom means nothing. It's all about focal length. When you learn enough about photography, you will know about certain non-zooming lenses that can make far objects seem much closer to you than the longest zoom lens available in other types of cameras.
If you want zoom, take a look at a Nikon P510. You can take pictures of the full moon with it! It's a
bridge camera. If you want a camera you can grow with, you can get a Nikon D3100 for close to $500 right now.
