Rifle Scope for My AR 15?

Comparing the Nikon Prostaff 3-9 40mm BDC Reticle scope with the Nikon P-223 3-9 40mm 600 BDC reticle for my AR 15. Anyone have thoughts for one over the other?

The P-223 has tactile turrets rather than capped ones. The P-223 BDC reticle is designed specifically for 55 gr.223 Rem, where the Prostaff reticle is generic and you may have to consult a chart to see range compensation is for a particular round. Other than that they are probably the same internally and in other aspects.

I prefer Redfield Scopes. I think they have one called the battlefield or something like that. Otherwise I have the Redfield revolution on a bolt action, its a 3-9x 40 as well and I like it so much more than the prostaff. Its around the same price point, maybe a little more, but the features and quality are so much better. Look into the Redfield rifle Scopes, definitely worth it.

My thoughts on the matter of scopes for AR15s:

I love the AR15 platform, but it quite simply does not do what bolt-action rifles do as well as bolt-action rifles do it. If you force your AR15 to act and dress like a bolt rifle, I think you are handicapping its functionality. Also note that the actual practical range for a military variant is going to be about 250 yards. I'm aware that you can hit a silouette target with iron sights out to 500 meters or more, but the 5.56/.223 is really about useless for any hunting or other practical shooting beyond about 250 yards (unless you are talking about a long barreled varmint/predator rifle with a slow twist - ARs actually do that quite well). You don't need a 3-9x scope on a.223 AR15 with a collapsible stock and a 16" barrel… You will be over magnified 99.9% of the time. I highly, highly recommend that if you want to put glass on a compact AR, you put something like a 1-4x or 1-6x scope on it. You are going to want to be able to dial down to 1x and shoot with both eyes open like you would with a red dot or reflex, but you may also want to zoom in to 4x or 6x and shoot a pig in the head at 200 yards. My 20" "designated marksman" style AR wears a Millet DMS-1 (which I absolutely love) and it is easily capable of scoring 20 hits out of a 20 round magazine on an 18"x18" steel target at 400 yards. You just don't need that much magnification with such a tiny bullet, and if you put a 3-9x on your rifle then you've boxed yourself out of the CQB and other close-range fun shooting that the AR15 does extremely well.

Take it or leave it, but I think that putting a 3-9x scope on your AR is going to leave you dissatisfied at some point.
