Where are these illusive mounting marks on nikkor lenses?

I recently kitted myself out with some new Nikon dslr kit and a variety of lenses, under the instructions on attaching lens it states that you need to allign the "mounting marks" on the camera and the lens as a first step. The mark / big white dot is very clear on the camera however, After ages of looking at all the lenses I have yet to find a corresponding mark / dot on any lens (they are all Nikkor btw). I'm managing to get the lens on but sometimes with a little trouble, but I fear doing any damage. I hope somewhere out there someone can advice. Regards

In days past, there used to be a red dot on the lens. More often than not, there will also be a white dot on the lens barrel.

However, these days it could be about anything; some lenses it's is the VR logo, other lenses it is the focus line or zoom index. But the proper point is what could be called "top dead center" to borrow a term from the automotive world.

In other words, the top of the lens is where the logo, focus window pointer, or other mark is.

Believe me, 6 months from now it will be second nature.

There's a white dot at about 2 o'clock looking at the mount on the body… And a corresponding white dot on the lens. Once engaging the lens with marks aligned an anti-clockwise twist of the lens until the lock clicks will secure the lens to the body…

You shouldn't do any damage so long as you don't force anything.

This image of a Nikon lens is a good example of where to look.
Look at the bottom of the image and, just above the contacts you can clearly see the white dot. Should be the same on your lenses.
