I typed in "Nikon portrait lens" in the search area on Amazon and got these results

just wondering what you thought about these lenses and if they would make good lenses for portraits or other usage?

I'm actually struggling to answer this one…

I shoot candid shots a lot and I reckon more than a few of these fall into portrait territory… If you are in a studio then sure a particular lens might be what you need, if you shoot elsewhere though… Then it depends on how you go about your business.

Most of the photographers I know swear by any of the 70-200mm F2.8 options… I personally use a 90mm on a crop sensor when I'm shooting an official portrait.

I wouldn't use the 35mm as it's a bit short focal length for portraits (although it has the equivalent field of view (full frame) of just over 52mm on a crop sensor, the wide angle distortion is still present.

I have and use the 50mm and the 85mm lengths for portraiture.

To get a detailed review of these and other lenses go to photozone.de.
There you will get an understanding on which lens are technically better.
Also keep in mind that 3rd-party lenses from Tokina, Tamron, and Sigma may be better options. Not only can they be optically better than Nikon lenses, but much cheaper too. No one lens manufacture makes the best of every lens. Nikon's top-of-the-line lenses are usually hard to beat, but they do get beaten from time to time. Do your homework to find out if the extra money for a Nikon, even if superior, is worth it. You may find that the best lens may end up costing 50% more for just a 10% improvement over another lens.

I would recommend this one for that purpose.
