IS MY PRIME LENS BROKEN?
I stupidly dropped my Nikon Prime lens this morning on the floor. The quality of pic is still fine but there's movement and blur even at fast shutter speeds… Also when the camera tells me it is at the perfect exposure… The shot is actually over exposed so I have to deliberately under expose for the right effect… Any ideas? And if it is does anyone know if it can be fixed?
If it's overexposing now then it's likely the aperture diaphragm is damaged. I'd get the lens serviced. If it's not insured and it's a cheap prime like a 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 it would be better to spring for a new one.
Same thing happened to me… I dropped my 24-70mm f/2.8 which caused it to suffer terrible coma due the elements being knocked out of alignment. Either get a quote for repair, or replace it… Mine is costing £500 ($800) to be repaired by Nikon… Depending on what prime lens you have, yours is likely to be a lot cheaper.
Take off the lens. Loosen the large screws at the base a bit but don't take them off. Tap the front end lightly, focus very gently from near to infinity and try moving the aperture arm at the base of the lens to see if all works smoothly. IF they do, tighten the screws back, problem solved, heave a heavy sigh of relief. If not, tighten anyway and head for servicing. Bring credit card just in case.
