Rode VideoMic Pro for DSLR?
I have the Nikon D800 and am now looking for a decent mic for movie shooting outdoors and in with dialog. Would the Rode VideoMic Pro be a good choice if I had it on a boom pole? Are there any problems with the mic?
Like anything else check the price. If it's cheap no it's not a good mike. I'm very familiar with both Shure and Sennheiser products - the best there are. They're not cheap but they are excellent.
The Rode VideoMic Pro isn't really designed to be mounted on a pole. It's a great mic for DSLRs as it's forward facing with an effective shock (noise reducing) mount, and direct connection into many cameras.
Start mounting such a mic on a pole and you start to degrade it's major selling points.
My own audio system is maybe a little extreme but I use something similar on a shock mount but with the mic then fed into an audio recorder which outputs into the camera and to headphones. The audio recorder has higher quality, but recording in parallel into the camera makes it very easy to sync the external audio later. *Oddly I can find I have to stretch the external audio files a little to make them fit with the video.
